Chinese New Year Celebration at High School West

On the evening of February 14, 2003, Half Hollow Hills High School West was much in the spirit of celebration.  The gym was decorated with red lanterns.  A large Chinese character meaning “fortune” was shining on the wall, with rich color of gold.  About 360 people of the Dix Hills Chinese School (Dix hills Chinese Cultural Association, or DHCCA), with their honored guests from the School District and Huaxia Chinese School, gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year, to express their gratefulness to the devotion by many in the past year, and to pray for the prosperity in the Year of the Lamb.

Mr. George Qiao, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Dr. Weizhong Cai, President (Principal) of the Chinese School, addressed those in attendance and thanked the District and High School West for their support.  They acknowledged the selfless devotion by the parents and teachers and welcomed the anticipated growth of the organization in the coming year.  Board of Education President Alissa Sue Taff and Superintendent of School Dr. Sheldon Karnilow also made speeches affirming their commitment in supporting cultural diversity and the educational program of the Chinese School.  The Chinese School, since its inception in December 2000, has attracted 150 students of both Chinese and non-Chinese backgrounds and has been growing rapidly.  It is a non-profit organization devoted to providing an opportunity for everyone in the community to learn the Chinese language and to enjoy the Chinese culture.   It offers a Friday night educational program from September to June with a structured curriculum on modern Chinese.  In this program, besides the Chinese language courses, students also take cultural courses in Chinese painting, martial arts, Chinese folk dance, Chinese chess, arts and crafts, and Chinese web site design.

The New Year party started with a Lion Dance.  Those in attendance relished more than 50 dishes of gourmet Chinese food with appetite-stimulating colors, smells, and tastes.  The students participated in more than 10 specially designed games characterized with the Chinese culture.  The parents and guests were entertained by the sounds of the Chinese dulcimer and a chorus performance.  In a festive ambience, the three-hour celebration was filled with joy from the beginning to the end.
